Interview with Ruth Peterson: The Ruth Peterson Pop Up

Here at Number Six , we’ve recently teamed up with Liverpool born designer Ruth Peterson. Her eponymous brand has a heavy horror influence, and it’s making waves across the menswear scene. We took 5 minutes to catch up with Ruth Peterson herself to see what keeps her ticking, and explore the influence behind the collection.

Ruth, welcome to Number Six! Let’s start with an intro to the collection.

It’s technically menswear, but at the minute we’re calling it unisex because we’ve got girls and lads buying it. It’s all horror inspired, so every collection I do is going to be somewhat inspired by horror - it’s what keeps me going.

Tell us a bit more about the pop up pieces you’ve brought in for us.

The pieces you’ve got at Number Six are taken from my graduate collection, it got a great response when it launched, people wanted to buy the jackets and gilets. Because there was a demand for it, I chose to put the jacket and gilet into production to see what I could do with it. Here we’ve got two colourways available in the puffer coat and gilet, it all fits with my graduate collection too, which people are starting to recognise.

What’s the most important thing for you when it comes to production?

Everything from Ruth Peterson is produced in the UK, and it’s all animal friendly. We made the decision to not use duck down because I don’t believe in it. The materials we’ve used are really durable, ethically sourced, produced and sold. It’s something we pride ourselves on.

Give us a rundown of the future plans for Ruth Peterson menswear?

I’m setting up in London now, and putting more and more ideas out to see what the response is like. We’ve found people have maintained an interest with the coats, so it was a no-brainer to keep it going.

What’s been your biggest design influence?

All of our silhouettes take form from strong streetwear, with oversized puffer jackets, baggy sweaters and corporate-inspired prints. The jacket we’ve got for the Number Six pop up features our original Ruth Peterson ‘ADSA’ print. This is a comment on prominent branding in the current market, we’re switching up the standard response to supermarket logos and making it a bit desirable.

Thanks for your time, Ruth.

No problem, see you at the Number Six pop up!

We’re holding a 5 day pop up from the 24th - 28th Jan, we’re fully stocked in two colourways of the original Ruth Peterson Jacket and Gilet from the 2015 graduate collection. Make sure you give us a visit, good vibes all day long thanks to the Ruth Peterson and Number Six teams.
